What's wrong with my tomatoes?

For the last five years I have grown tomatoes in Melbourne from seedling and around mid January the bottom leaves start yellowing. This yellowing eventually moves up the plant faster than green growth and eventually the plant dies. At the bottom stem of the plant whre it yellows the stem is spotty brown. Is it a fungus? Can anyone advise of cause and treament.
