What possible books could I study at A2 English Literature?

I'm starting A level English Literature soon and I know that in AS, you study up on one Shakespeare play and three other texts from a list given by the board of examiners. However, I recently found out that at A2, you may choose a book/novel of your choice that you would enjoy writing about. I also found out that you have to be very careful when it comes to picking novels, because you don't want anything too simple; you want something worthy of studying at A2. So, I was wondering is 1984 by George Orwell would be appropriate or too simplistic. I'm sure it won't be, but I'd like to check. Any other suggestions for novels I could study would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
